The Moment of Life: Circus Woman with Parrots

Circus Woman with Parrots

Circus Woman with Parrots

about 1930, watercolour with distemper, 368 × 426 mm

(on the reverse side and crossed through)

In many cases we find Hegenbarth’s work on both sides of the paper.
“The Circus Woman” appears to us today as a precious gem, yet she was crossed through and left as the back of another work. Unusual in colour and motif, reminiscent of the fin de siècle tradition.
The prosaic obverse catapults us two decades forward into a scene of ruins: A crude joke, lack of paper or a memento mori?
