The Moment of Life: The Women at the Tomb

The Women at the Tomb

The Women at the Tomb

1950, brush drawing, 170 × 120 mm

The drawing portrays in fantastically dynamic brush strokes the force of life in the most literal sense of St Mark’s Gospel, banishes the moment of residual uncertainty and at the same time resolves it as truth through personal experience.
The Word as a picture — a climax of the art of illustration: the rock that has moved, the Trümmerfrauen*, the empty tomb. “He is not here” (Mark 16.6) and yet he is, as youth or angel, then as now.
